Gardening and Landscaper Adelaide Mistakes You Must Avoid

Gardening and landscaping are enjoyable, but you must know the common mistakes to avoid them to succeed.

Landscaping can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, or it can turn into a nightmare if you’re not careful. A few simple mistakes made during landscaping can ruin the entire design. Take a look at these common landscaping mistakes to avoid from your resident landscaper Adelaide:

1 – Not Making Sure Your Beds are Deep Enough

When planting shrubs and trees, it’s essential to consider their mature size. You want the plant to have room to grow without being cramped. Check the plant label or a landscaping book for recommended planting distance. If you are unsure how deep your bed should be, dig a hole that is two times as wide and just as deep as the root ball of your plant.

2 – Not Preparing the Soil in Advance

If you’re going to dig up old plants and sod, make sure you have a plan for the soil that you are removing. It can be tempting to dump it at the side of your yard, but if you don’t want an area filled with trees or shrubs, you need to come up with something else. Dig a hole and fill it with the soil that you’ve taken out of your garden bed.

3 – Not Limiting Vertical Climbing Plants

You might be tempted to plant some pretty vines on that trellis you just installed in your garden, but don’t bother unless it is covered with flowers or fruit. Ornamental climbers can overgrow and outgrow the space provided by their support structure. Therefore, it’s best to keep them pruned back at all times so they remain manageable.

4 – Forgetting the Soil Nutrients

A healthy lawn or garden doesn’t just happen. You have to feed it regularly to maintain the health and vibrancy of your plants. Compost is an excellent fertilizer that can be used throughout the year, but there are other nutrients as well – particularly nitrogen-based fertilizers like urea, for instance.

5 – Making Repairs Without the Right Tools

If you’re unsure how to take care of your plants or accomplish landscaping tasks, don’t just make them up as you go along with whatever tools are most convenient. You could damage your plants by trying to plant something too big for the hole you’ve dug or by using the wrong soil amendments to fix a problem. For example, if your plants suffer from too much sun or heat, you might think that adding some mulch will help out – but it probably won’t make a difference. Mulch insulates the soil and makes things worse for your plants. Instead, you need to amend the soil with something that will reduce moisture and reflect sunlight.

6 – Ignoring Native Plants

When deciding what to plant in your garden, you may be torn between choosing a native species versus a more exotic one. The advantage of going with a native plant is that it will thrive in your climate without much extra care on your part. These plants have adapted to their local environment over time, and they require less water and fertilizer. If you live in a climate that gets a lot of rain during the growing season, it’s also wise to stick with natives as they are better suited to handle those conditions.

Conclusion

Some mistakes are easy to overlook, particularly if you do not have much experience in this area. Hence, you’re better off partnering with a landscaper Adelaide. With a bit of time and thoughtful consideration, you can avoid these landscaping mistakes and end up with a garden that is both beautiful and healthy.
